Many people love Arizona for its warm temperatures, its quiet, arid deserts and its beautiful natural scenery. Arizona is a great state to call home, however, it’s also a home for a number of pests. The hot, dry climate is suitable for various types of bugs and insects, many of which can be quite dangerous. Here are five of the most harmful pests that homeowners in Arizona have to deal with.
Termites
Termites are nature’s most efficient demolition crews. On average termites in America cause over five billion dollars in damage every year. And Arizona’s right on top of the most aggressive termite belt in the country. If you aren’t careful, a termite colony could cause major damage to your house without you even knowing. Experts recommend having your home inspected at least annually because as the saying goes, “It’s not a matter of if you’ll get termites, but when you’ll get them.”
Ants
Ants are another harmful insect that are rampant in Arizona. There are many different species of ants, and none of them are good to have in your home. Whether they’re black ants spreading germs, carpenter ants chewing tunnels throughout your walls, or fire ants delivering painful stings, they all need to be kept out. FYI, mint, cinnamon, black pepper, vinegar and lemon juice make good natural ant deterrents.
Scorpions
Not only are scorpions one of the most nightmarish pests in the southwest, they are also one of the most deadly. Many of them have clear, almost glass-like bodies making them difficult to spot, and bark scorpions can deliver enough venom to cause respiratory issues, convulsions and intense pain. If you are stung by one of these scorpions, get yourself medical attention immediately.
Spiders
All spiders are frightening, but most of them are harmless. Unfortunately, Arizona is home to two of the most dangerous spiders: black widows and the Arizona brown spider (a brown recluse spider). Both spiders like to hide in dark secluded places, but will make their way inside a home as well.
Bees/Wasps
Finally, Arizona is a hotspot for bees and wasps. These pests are prone to building their hives in trees and on buildings, especially during the summer. Africanized (“killer”) bees are one of the most dangerous kinds, as they attack in swarms and, with enough stings, can even kill a full grown adult. Research from the University of Arizona indicates that 99% of all wild honey bees populations in Southern Arizona should be considered Africanized.
Despite all the pests, Arizona is a great place to live. As long as you take the necessary precautions, you shouldn’t have any trouble. For more tips, or to receive quality pest control services, contact our local experts today!
